AEC MkV Mandator
This 1960 AEC Mk.V Mandator of Henry Long Ltd. of Manningham, Yorkshire battles though the snow on the old A45 trunk road in the mid-sixties. In those relatively traffic free days snow tended to persist even on main roads and the skill of drivers was severely tested driving on the frozen surfaces, especially if driving an artic where the hazard of a jack-knife where the unit’s brakes coming on a fraction before the trailer’s meant that the trailer would tend to overtake the tractor unit was ever present.
The AA telephone box was once a common site on British roads before the advent of the mobile phone made such things redundant, and were for the use of AA members to ring for assistance in case of breakdown, non-members just had to take their chances!
